Greetings Edison Academy Families,

Happy Halloween! It is hard to believe that today, Thursday, October 31st, marks the end of the first quarter. There will be a two-hour early release for students today. Please note that on Friday, November 1st there is no school for students and staff for the Diwali holiday.  Monday, November 4th, and Tuesday, November 5th, are student holidays and there is no school for students.

Students are still busy earning industry certifications and learning new workplace skills. Culinary Arts students recently took their ServSafe National food safety certification exam.

We have had a successful first quarter and have lots to celebrate. Our upcoming Student of the Quarter award winners will be announced in our November newsletter and also posted on our website.

We will continue sending you a monthly newsletter to share important information and good news.

Sincerely,

Monica Bentley, Academy Administrator

Farewell Mr. Russell & Ms. Frederick

We bid a fond farewell to two valued members of our Edison Academy community, Mr. Kevin Russell and Ms. Tisa Frederick.

Mr. Russell has accepted a SOSA position at Mountain View High School. His last day with us will be October 31st. We extend our sincere gratitude for his dedicated service as our Criminal Justice teacher and department chair. His expertise and leadership have significantly impacted our students, staff, and program. We wish him all the best in his new role.

Ms. Tisa Frederick has accepted the position of Senior Career Experience Specialist with FCPS Instructional Services. Her positive energy, creativity, and genuine connection with students, staff, and the community have made a remarkable impact on Edison Academy and FCPS. Her innovative ideas, including her engaging Instagram reels, have increased our social media following by a significant 63%. Tisa's commitment to student success is evident in her tireless efforts to document and promote high-quality work-based learning experiences, field trips, student ambassador programs, and guest speaker events.

We are grateful for her contributions and wish her continued success in her new role.

Please join us in congratulating both Mr. Russell and Ms. Frederick on their well-deserved promotions and future endeavors.

Welcome Mr. Dixon to Edison Academy

Mr. Dixon's career path is marked by diverse experiences and significant contributions to public service. After practicing law for eight years and teaching high school, he joined the FBI in 2004. Over the next two decades, he served in various roles, including Special Agent, Supervisory Special Agent, and Unit Chief, working in locations such as Laredo, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Clarksburg, West Virginia; and the Washington, D.C. area. His investigative work encompassed a broad spectrum of criminal activity, including drug cartels, kidnappings, child exploitation, assaults on federal officers, human trafficking, public corruption, healthcare fraud, money laundering, and counterterrorism. Additionally, Mr. Dixon spent five years as an instructor at the FBI Academy, training new agents and analysts, and was certified as a hostage negotiator. He retired from the FBI in 2024 and now joins Edison Academy.

Haunted House

Edison Academy's 2nd Annual Haunted House was a huge success. This year they were able to add an evening component where the local community was able to come out and enjoy for a minimal cost of $1!  Thank you to Mr. Wolfe and the collaborative work from all of the academy classes for making this a spooky good time!

Edison Academy Families,

We had a great first two weeks! Just a reminder that Edison High School is one of eight high schools testing a new cell phone storage program. Below you will find the statement released by our Principal, Amanda Burke:

Students will have their cell phones silenced and stored in a cell phone storage unit located in the classroom while they are in classes. This will be a big change, but I'm excited for us to create a better learning environment for our students and our teachers!

By going phone-free, our teachers will be able to spend more time teaching and less time asking students to put their cell phones away. And our students will spend more time learning and engaging. Other school districts that have this process say that their students are getting better grades and test scores, and participating more in class. They’re also going to more after-school events and connecting more with their classmates.

Even though FCPS already has rules against using cell phones in class, they’re still a concern. Studies show that young people who use their phones at school have trouble learning, focusing, and getting good grades. Even when a student has put their own phone away, hearing it vibrate in their backpack, getting a smartwatch alert, or seeing another student use their phone can distract them. It can take up to 20 minutes for students to start paying attention again after each time they get distracted in class.

On Tuesday, September 3, we will begin asking students to place their phones into a cell phone storage unit at the beginning of each class. Phones will be stored away, so that students can spend more time connecting with each other, learning, and focusing.

If your student needs access to their phone for medical accommodations, it is important to note that the current cell phone policy and guidelines have not changed. Therefore, students who currently require access to a cell phone or another personally owned device for medical reasons, or an accommodation to access the curriculum and make progress to their individualized goals, will continue to have such access.

Airpods must be stored in their backpacks. Smartwatches must be off or on airplane mode. Phones will be returned to the students at the end of each period.

You can find more information on FCPS’ cell phone storage webpage, where you can also provide feedback. We all look forward to an exciting and successful year at Edison Academy!

Sincerely,

Monica Bentley, Academy Administrator

PSAT/NMSQT/SAT

FCPS high schools will be hosting the Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) for Grade 10-11 students and the SAT School Test Day for Seniors on Wednesday, October 9.  There will be no Academy classes on this date.

Standards Based Grading

At Edison High School, we believe in a grading practice which fosters a growth mindset; therefore, we have implemented standards-based grading. Standards Based Grading is a grading and reporting practice to communicate student progress of the course standards; grades directly assessing a standard/skill determine the majority of the overall grade.  Students are given practice (formative) on the standard before the summative assessment; the highest level of learning on the summative assessment is recorded. This practice informs all stakeholders of the essential standards students learn in each subject area at a particular grade level.  It is designed to give students, teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians a better understanding of strengths and areas of growth for that student. Student progress of the essential standards is communicated in SIS.  All summative assessments will be "I Can" statements.

Standards Based practices include:

  • A grading and reporting practice to clearly communicate student progress on course standards
  • Gradebooks will be weighted
  • 70% of the gradebook will be Summative Assessments, or “I Can Statements.”
  • 30% of the gradebook will be formative, or practice, assessments/assignment
    • Formative assessments/assignments include ANY work wherein students receive personalized feedback (suggestions as to improve performance)
    • Assignments that are checked for completion are not considered formative
  • The highest level of learning is recorded

For more information, please review our grading and reporting guide posted on our website.

Attendance

Please contact the Edison Academy attendance office if your student will be absent or staying at the base school due to an altered schedule by email to [email protected], or via telephone 703-924-8137. This is in addition to informing the base school attendance office.

Edison Academy Parking

For non-Edison High School students only, the Edison Academy Student Transportation Form must be completed, signed, and returned to the Academy office as soon as possible. Students may not park at Edison Academy until they have received an approved parking permit. Parking is limited and Edison Academy students without shuttle transportation, seniors with jobs, and seniors are given priority. Parking applications can be obtained and returned at the Academy Office H102. Academy students may only park in the parking spaces labeled 1-35 near Door 13.

Please review the parking agreement and consequences below.

STUDENT PARKING AGREEMENT

  1. All students who park on campus must purchase a student parking permit.  Any student who parks on campus without a permit will receive a $25 fine.  Continued violations will result in booting or towing of the student’s vehicle.  All towing is done by a commercial towing company.  Edison High School is not responsible for damage to towed vehicles.
  2. Students will receive a $25 for the first parking violation.  Students will receive a $50 fine for the second parking violation and will have their parking permit revoked on the third violation.
  3. Academy students must promptly vacate their assigned academy parking space at the end of their academy session and not return for the remainder of the school day. Students who park in other parking spots are in violation of the student parking agreement and are subject to fines, booting, revocation of parking privileges, and/or towing.
  4. Students must display parking permits from the rear-view mirror, facing outwards, to be identifiable.
  5. Students may not return to their vehicle during the school day without the approval of a school official.
  6. Students must always adhere to speed limits and safe driving behavior.  Revocation of parking privileges will occur for reckless driving.
  7. Students, including car-pool members who leave school grounds without permission (properly checked out through attendance) during the school day, will be referred to their administrator.  The vehicle will be subject to a search by school security personnel and/or administrators upon returning to campus as well as possible revocation of parking privileges.
  8. Parking permit fees are not refundable for revoked permits.
  9. Student drivers must follow the directions of school officials directing traffic in the parking lot.
  10. Students are subject to all state and county traffic laws, including the report of traffic accidents and/or damage to other vehicles that occur at the school parking lots.  It is illegal to pass a school bus that is loading or unloading.
  11. Student parking privileges are subject to being revoked at any time by an administrator for disciplinary reasons for but not limited to behavior and attendance school.
  12. Parking on Edison property is at your own risk.  Edison/FCPS is not responsible for any damage or theft which takes place while parked on school property.
