Student Cohorts Return for Hands-On Learning

Small cohort groups of advanced level students from multiple programs have begun returning to Edison Academy for hands-on learning one or two days per week during the months of October and November. We celebrate their return in photos showcased in this blog. As new groups return we will be adding more photos.
Cosmetology Students Return In-Person

Edison Academy Cosmetology, level 2, students returned this week to begin their Practicals, the hands-on portion of learning they must have along with Theory, to prepare for their state board exams in Spring 2021. Students and their instructor, Ms. Hall, were excited to get into the cosmetology lab/salon, socially distanced and following safe protocols, to begin working with their mannequins.
Service Learning Google Site

The Service Learning Google Site for student support is now up and running. As we progress through the year, more student-focused support resources will be made available on the site. For now, there are four videos available for students to view in addition to the service learning student X2Vol login lesson.

Cyber Patriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association to inspire K-12 students towards careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines that are critical to our nation's future. The major components of Cyber Patriot membership include local online competitions leading to a national competition in Maryland, local and regional cyber-camps and preparation for competitions, with career mentorship by cyber professionals.

SkillsUSA serves middle, high and college/post-secondary school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled services. SkillsUSA provides competitions, leadership training, community service, scholarship opportunities and more for student members at the local, district, and national level.

Educators Rising is a national membership organization for aspiring teachers and their mentors. As a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO), Educators Rising offers resources and opportunities that integrate directly into the academic programs of the Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow program for high school students. Resources for student members includes curriculum, micro-credentials, a national conference, competitions, and scholarships.

Kim Karayannis is teaching Teachers For Tomorrow for the first time this year and is very excited to be working with future educators. This is Kim’s 21st year teaching at Edison and her first year teaching in the Edison Academy. She teaches history and AVID at Edison. Kim is active on committees that serve Edison students and teachers. She also teaches international students online on weekends. She is originally from California, but now lives in Dumfries with her two children and their dog, Roscoe.

Irene grew up in Fairfax County and is currently a resident of Prince William County with her husband, son, and daughter. She earned her Cosmetology license after attending Potomac Academy of Hair Design and has worked in the Cosmetology & Barbering industry for over 30 years. Irene obtained her Instructors license and began teaching in 2015 for Fairfax County Public Schools. She loves teaching and is dedicated to the success of each student.

Marla is a lifelong resident of Virginia, growing up in Prince William County. She is a wife, mom of 2 great kids and a Licensed Veterinary Technician. She received her AAS in Veterinary Technology from Northern Virginia Community College. She has spent the last 27 years working in veterinary hospitals including a few small animal general practices, the large animal teaching hospital at VA Tech, and an emergency and critical care practice. One of her greatest enjoyments in her career was training and teaching others and this is what led her to become a veterinary science teacher.
