Chinese 1

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12  |  Credit: 1  |  Prerequisite: None

Students develop the necessary skills for functional oral and written communication by using the language in meaningful contexts. They will examine the historical background, educational system, arts and customs of Chinese culture as well as the influence of Chinese culture in the United States. 

Chinese 2

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12  |  Credit: 1  |  Prerequisite: Chinese 1 or demonstrated proficiency

Students continue to develop proficiency in all four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on the ability to communicate orally. They have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret the content of simple readings. The study of Chinese history and culture is integrated into the language development process.

Chinese 3

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12  |  Credit: 1  |  Prerequisite: Chinese 2 or demonstrated proficiency

Students continue to develop proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on understanding and responding to statement and conversations conducted in Chinese. They have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret the content of assigned readings dealing with abstract concepts. Cultural topics include Chinese art, music, and literature and its influence on American culture.

IB Chinese SL 1

Grades: 11, 12  |  Credit: 1  |  1.0 weight  |  Prerequisite: Chinese 3 or demonstrated proficiency

Students continue to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese while exploring Chinese culture. Through interactive activities, textual analysis, and language acquisition strategies, students enhance their communication skills and cultural understanding. The topics covered include Identities, Experiences, Social Organization, Human Ingenuity, and Sharing the Planet.

IB Chinese SL 2

Grades: 11, 12  |  Credit: 1  |  1.0 weight  |  Prerequisite: IB Chinese SL 1 or demonstrated proficiency

This course empowers students to refine their communication skills through the interpretation of written and audio texts, as well as through writing and speaking activities. By engaging with diverse topics such as Identities, Experiences, Social Organization, Human Ingenuity, and Sharing the Planet, students deepen their understanding of both language and culture.

Ms. Hsieh joined the Edison community in 2019. She is originally from Taiwan. Before coming to the United States, she was an elementary school teacher in Taiwan. She earned a BA in Teaching from Hsinchu Teacher’s College in Taiwan and an MA in Education from NYU. Ms. Hsieh has been teaching Chinese for over 15 years.

Ms. Hsieh loves sharing the Chinese language and culture with her students. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, practicing calligraphy, and walking in nature.
