Nearly a dozen talented HVAC students from District 5 showcased their skills and passion for the trades at the recent SkillsUSA Virginia District 5 contest, with remarkable performances that secured multiple first-place finishes and advanced several students to the State Leadership Conference in Roanoke, Virginia, from April 4th through the 6th.

West Springfield High School’s standout student, Fin Brandt, secured first place in the HVAC contest, earning the opportunity to represent the district at the state level. This student emerged as the top performer in a competitive field, demonstrating exceptional proficiency and dedication, solidifying their role as a leading representative of the HVAC program.

Mount Vernon High School student Tomas Flores also celebrated success as another talented student earned second place in the HVAC contest, joining their peers on the journey to the State Leadership Conference in Roanoke. Their remarkable achievement highlights the skill and dedication within the HVAC program.

Edison High School’s Eduardo Ramirez made a powerful showing with a first-place win in the Job Skill Demonstration contest, further emphasizing their students' technical excellence and presentation skills. In addition, another Edison student, Sergio Santiago, claimed first place in the Facilathon contest, showcasing exceptional leadership and problem-solving abilities.

Bryant High School student Mohammad Al-Towaiti also achieved recognition as their student secured first place in both the State and National T-Shirt Design contests, reflecting their creativity and design skills on a grand scale.

Meanwhile, West Springfield High School’s entrepreneurship team, Jeremy Ramos and Colin McNamara, claimed first place in the District 5 SkillsUSA Entrepreneurship contest. Their innovative business plan impressed the judges, and they will present their ideas to the State Leadership Committee in April.

West Springfield High School student Dominic Nguyen earned 3rd place in the HVAC contest, and the bronze medal for his stellar demonstration of skills.

The contest would not have been possible without the incredible support from local industry partners. Service Works played a pivotal role by donating $5,000 worth of copper, enhancing the students' hands-on experience. Alumni Elvis Garcia and Mark Garcia, now active members of the HVAC Advisory Committee, and Jarrod Lemieux volunteered as judges, providing invaluable industry insights and mentorship to the competitors.

Additional industry leaders who lent their expertise as judges included Dylan White from Boland, who is set to speak to the HVAC students next month. Boland currently employs several graduates from last year who are now working with Steamfitters Local 602. Mike Basso from Argent Heating and Cooling also served as a judge, along with Craig Lewis, Trade Industrial Specialist, who supported the Job Skill Demonstration contest.

“We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements and grateful for the unwavering support from our industry partners and alumni,” said Robert Stringham, HVAC Instructor at Edison Academy. “These contests recognize our students' hard work and talent and showcase the vibrant community that stands behind the next generation of skilled professionals.”

Congratulations to all the winners and participants for their remarkable achievements. Edison Academy and District 5 eagerly anticipate the State Leadership Conference in Roanoke, where these exceptional students will again demonstrate their skills, knowledge, and passion for their craft.
