A K-9 unit from the Fairfax County Police Department visited Edison Academy. I was so excited when I heard that a K-9 unit was coming to visit our school! I love dogs, and I was curious to learn more about what police dogs do.

This K-9 unit, which consisted of two police officers and their trained dogs, gave a presentation to the students about the importance of police dogs and the work that they do. The officers explaining how police dogs are selected and trained. They explained that police dogs are typically bred from working breeds, such as German Shepherds and Blood Hounds. These breeds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and physical prowess. The officers discussed the different types of work that police dogs do. They explained that police dogs are used to detect drugs and explosives, track suspects, and apprehend dangerous criminals. They also said that police dogs are used in search and rescue operations.

The officer then introduced their K-9 partner to the students. The dogs, a German Shepherd named Duke, and a Blood Hound named Leo, were able to display their expertise. The officer gave the students a demonstration of Duke’s attack skills. There were no drugs on the premises, so we were unable to really see Leo’s skills, but he was super cute and friendly! The students were very impressed with the K-9’s. They asked many questions about the K-9 unit and the work that they do. The officer was happy to answer their questions and provide them with more information about police dogs.

The visit from the K-9 unit was a great success. The students learned a lot about police dogs and the important role that they play in law enforcement It was a great opportunity to learn about these amazing animals and the important work that they do. I would recommend a visit from a K-9 unit to any school.
