Opportunities posted here are primarily for high school students in grades 9-12. Opportunities that are exclusively offered to graduating high school Seniors and graduates are found here

Helpful Hints for Students 

When researching student internships and opportunities be sure to read the descriptions carefully to be sure they are for high school students. If you find an internship of interest to you but are not certain if you qualify for it, please reach out to the Edison Academy Career Experience Specialist (or your teacher or Academy support team member) to have them help you review the opportunity to determine your eligibility.  Many internships have requirements or qualifications that must be met to apply such as citizenship, age, course of study you are engaged in, and others.

    Alexandria Seaport Foundation Apprenticeship Program

    Alexandria Seaport Foundation Apprentice Program  Highlighted in Forbes magazine, this program uses the craft of woodworking and traditional boatbuilding as an immersive experience that teaches technical skills and habits of mind that are needed for success in employment and adulthood. Apprentices work alongside experienced woodworkers, carpenters, boat builders, and mentors who teach and challenge them each day.

    Allan Myers Heavy Civil Construction Summer Internships 

    Allan Myers is heavy civil construction builder of roads, bridges, treatment plants and other infrastructure. They self-perform their work rather than relying on subcontractors and they provide on-the-job training. They are seeking hard working, enthusiastic individuals for summer internships that might last 3-6 months depending upon student availability to work.  Valid driver's license required.     Animal Husbandry Internship (May be of interest to Vet Science students) 

    Rolling Application The Animal Husbandry Internship will provide a well-rounded experience for individuals actively pursuing a career in animal care and education. The internship will cover topics including best practices in animal welfare, zoonotic diseases, training, AZA/SSP information, USDA requirements, recording keeping, etc. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.     Children's Science Center Youth Advisory Board

    2023- 2025 The Children’s Science Center Lab’s Youth Advisory Board is made up of Northern Virginia high school students who volunteer, collaborate, and create programs that contribute to the Children's Science Center's goal of inspiring a love of STEM.  All members serve a two-year term.  Each member contributes approximately 6 to 10 hours per month attending Board and team meetings, developing projects for the Children's Science Center, volunteering at the Lab on weekends and during school breaks, and participating in community events.  The application opens in the winter each year, and rising freshmen through rising junior high school students are eligible to apply. 

    *Students hired for these internships may enroll in the Internship course offered in participating high schools. Speak with a counselor or CTE teacher to learn more about adding the internship course to your schedule and receive 1 high school credit for this experience.     Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) Internship

    Summer 2023

    The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CC) Internship was created to expand the cybersecurity talent pipeline by reaching high school students who are 17+ and interested in exploring cybersecurity as a possible career option. The internship includes professional skills training and placement with Northern Virginia cyber-related organizations to prepare them to enter the cyber workforce of the future. The internship includes a program stipend at the successful completion of the 7-week program and is open to rising high school seniors and rising first-year college/university students. Applications will open January 9th, 2023. 

    Coming Spring 2023 - Fairfax County Public Schools, Office of Facilities, Trades 4 Tomorrow, Youth Apprenticeships

    For high school students in selected Trades and Industry (T &I) courses. Students have a paid work-based learning experience with the FCPS Office of Facilities Management in their youth apprenticeship program Students must be enrolled in one of the relevant T & I programs and upon hiring will be registered with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry for Youth Apprenticeship. Upon high school graduation, work experience combined with the T & I course work can be transferred to a registered full-time apprenticeship program.  Trades work experiences can include: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural trades ( carpentry and flooring), cabinetry, welding/sheet metal and outdoor power equipment maintenance and repair ( diesel and gas tractors, snow plows, mowers, and small engines). 

    Students must be available to work hours between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. around their school schedule, must be 16 years old or older, must be enrolled in a T & I program, must have driver's license and reliable transportation to and from various FCPS satellite and support centers, and must submit a resume as well as completing the google form application. FCPS work locations can include; Edison Satellite, Herndon Satellite, Merrifield Satellite, Sideburn Satellite, and Woodson Support Center.

    DPR Construction - Build Up High School Internships - 

    DPR Construction offers Build Up High School Internships for rising High School Juniors, Seniors, and recent 2023 high school graduates. Interns are paid aa generous hourly rate on a weekly pay cycle. Transportation stipends may be available. Gain mentors in the fields of construction, engineering, and architecture.     Latina SciGirls Internship

    Spring 2023 Latina SciGirls (LSG), the PBS-designed program, showcases STEM learning in Latinas through the incorporation of hands-on activities, multi-media tools, and exposure to accomplished Latina STEM mentors. Over the course of nine weeks, thirty participants in grades 3-6 from a Northern Virginia elementary school will convene to investigate STEM topics ranging from recycling to animal habitats to forensic science. The LSG Interns will work alongside lab staff interacting with LSG participants, facilitating experiments, and leading groups and individuals through explorations of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics concepts.       Virginia Tire and Auto Youth Registered Apprenticeships

      Virginia Tire & Auto is seeking a Youth Registered Apprentice for our Bristow, Cascades or South Riding location who is passionate about working on cars and who will thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Our modern automotive shops are filled with the latest tools and technologies, giving the student the opportunity to grow and learn. Students will be paid $11/hour. Eligibility: •Current senior enrolled in a high school auto tech program •Valid driver’s license •17+ years of age •Early work release from school and available to work Saturdays •Letter of recommendation from auto tech teacher

      Position Overview includes the following: 

      Hands-On Experience

      • Complete Vehicle Condition Reports (VCR) with technicians
      • Look up scheduled maintenance for vehicles and note on VCR
      • Reset basic maintenance lights
      • Check tire pressure and lights
      • Print oil change stickers
      • Vacuum cars, put in water bottles and wipe down vehicles
      • Clean windshields (outside)
      • Deliver parts from Production Manager to Techs
      • Shadow Techs as workflow permits

      Shop Organization

      • Pull tires for tickets and label with Sales Order
      • Put away tires
      • Put seat covers and floor mats in vehicles
      • Load VCRs into pouches

      Youth Registered Apprenticeships (YRA) 

      Students may have an opportunity to work for a sponsoring employer as a youth apprentice to gain on-the-job work experience while studying in a level 2 or level 3 trades class and completing their academic high school classes for graduation. Apprentices may continue in the occupation as adult apprentices with the same or a different employer after high school graduation. Contact your course instructor or the Academy's Career Experience Specialist, Eugenia Williford if you have a work opportunity that you believe may qualify you for a YRA opportunity.  

      To become a Youth Registered Apprentice students must: 

      Be enrolled in an Edison Academy level 2 or level 3 class in Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Construction Technology, Electrical Construction and Engineering, or the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program and have an employer in a related field of work who wishes to sponsor them for youth apprenticeship.

      Other specific requirements are determined by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (VDOLI). Students may gain credit for their high school related technical instruction in the Career and Technical Education high school trades program and earn credit for on-the-job training with their sponsoring employer.  

      Apprenticeship Course for High School Course Credit 

      Students who have a sponsoring employer who has agreed to register and employ them in an apprentice position may take the FCPS Apprenticeship Course, 984100 and receive course credit in addition to their enrolled CTE course credit if all conditions of the Youth Apprenticeship are satisfied.
