Edison Academy Voyages to Shipbuilding Shores: Exploring Careers at The Apprentice School
Ahoy, future innovators! On February 15, 2024, a group of eager students and instructors from the Edison Academy embarked on a unique adventure, thanks to a generous grant from Educate Fairfax. Our destination? The historic Apprentice School located in Newport News, VA, where the mighty vessels of Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company take shape.
This wasn't your average field trip. Immersed in the heart of the shipbuilding industry, our Edison explorers gained firsthand insights into the diverse career paths waiting for them. The opportunity was about opening students' eyes to a world of opportunities beyond traditional college paths. The hands-on experiences, coupled with the educational value they would also obtain by attending The Apprentice School.
We owe a big thanks to Educate Fairfax for making this transformative experience possible. Their grant allowed us to expose our students to a hidden gem, expanding their horizons and igniting their passion for skilled trades.
This trip was more than a visit; it was a spark. A spark that could set many young minds on a path towards fulfilling careers in the exciting world of shipbuilding and beyond. We are happy to announce that we have a student that has applied and been admitted (all due to this visit) for the Fall Semester. So, who knows, maybe the next generation of maritime innovators is already walking among us – thanks to the power of exploration and the generosity of Educate Fairfax! Big thank you as well to LaShand Colman, Talent Acquisition Representative from The Apprentice School for helping coordinate the trip. Check out some of the photos below from our trip!
