Cyber: Exploring IT

Professional Certification Opportunities: CompTIA Tech+ 

Students enter the world of computer technology and gain practical experience in assembling a computer system, installing an operating system, troubleshooting computers and peripherals, and using system tools and diagnostic software. They develop skills in computer networking and resource sharing.  In addition, students explore the relationships between internal and external computer components. Emphasis is placed on exploring all aspects of IT including programming, database skills, using office automation software, as well as basic computer system hardware and software concepts.  Beyond the technical aspect of the class students also develop an understanding of customer service skills, college paths and career exploration to help in the decision making process for upcoming college and/or job prospects.  Upon successful completion of the course, students may qualify to take the CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ certification exam. 

Cyber: Systems Tech

Grades: 10-12

Prerequisite: Cyber: Exploring IT or equivalent skill

Building on the foundation of Cyber: Exploring IT, this advanced course trains students in optimizing, troubleshooting, and upgrading computer systems and subsystems. Students gain expertise in wireless technologies, networking, and security equipment while mastering end-user devices such as PCs, laptops, mobile devices, and peripherals. With an emphasis on technical proficiency and workplace readiness, the course prepares students for careers in the electronics and computer industries or further academic study. Students may earn the CompTIA A+ certification and are encouraged participate in internship programs provided by FCPS and Edison’s business partners.

Hands-on learning is a key component of this course, with students working on advanced projects that bring IT concepts to life. They build server rooms, install enterprise infrastructure, troubleshoot client equipment, and even construct an AI deep learning server. These real-world applications enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and technical skills, giving students a competitive edge for college and career readiness in today’s tech-driven world.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 13 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. These occupations are projected to add about 667,600 new jobs. Demand for these workers will stem from greater emphasis on cloud computing, the collection and storage of big data, and information security. The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $97,430 in May 2021, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $45,760.
