Course Descriptions

Formerly Computer Systems Technology Level 1 - Students enter the world of computer technology and gain practical experience in assembling a computer system, installing an operating system, troubleshooting computers and peripherals, and using system tools and diagnostic software. They develop skills in computer networking and resource sharing.  In addition, students explore the relationships between internal and external computer components. Emphasis is placed on exploring all aspects of IT including programming, database skills, using office automation software, as well as basic computer system hardware and software concepts.  Beyond the technical aspect of the class students also develop an understanding of customer service skills, college paths and career exploration to help in the decision making process for upcoming college and/or job prospects.  Upon successful completion of the course, students may qualify to take the CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ certification exam. Students are encouraged to join our Career and Technical Student Organization, FBLA, which bridges the high school students’ learning environment to the professional business world. 

 

COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS

The Cyber: Exploring IT curriculum enhances the rigor and relevance of academic programs by integrating the technical subject matter and professional skills that employers are demanding in the 21st century workplace.  A strong emphasis is placed on students demonstrating employability skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, resume building, interviewing, group collaboration and project management.  Students also learn and apply higher- order thinking skills that mirror the level of excellence expected in higher education.  Using the latest online learning technologies, students demonstrate valuable skills that will give them an advantage in pursuing these types of future careers and more:  Computer User Support Specialists, Junior Network Administrator, Entry Level Systems Analyst. This course also sets the foundation for pursuing higher level positions such as:  Management Information Systems, Computer Systems Engineer, Computer and Information Research Scientists.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 13 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. These occupations are projected to add about 667,600 new jobs. Demand for these workers will stem from greater emphasis on cloud computing, the collection and storage of big data, and information security. The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $97,430 in May 2021, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $45,760.
