On January 27, 2020 the District SkillsUSA competitions were held at Edison Academy and on February 8, 2020 the Culinary Arts competitions were held at Stratford University, Woodbridge Campus to select top champions who are now eligible to attend and compete at the Virginia State Championships in Roanoke, VA April 24-26. Congratulations to our students who competed and those who are going on the the State Championships. Donations are now being accepted to help students cover their transportation, lodging, and competition expenses. Students from the Electrical Construction and Engineering Class at Edison Academy recently visited Stonewall Jackson HS in Prince William County Schools, Manassas, Virginia, during the month of January 2020 to teach electrical conduit bending and installation to students in their Electricity program. Instructor Joe Wolfe offered the opportunity on a teacher workday to his advanced level students to help them expand their leadership experience by teaching others.

Representatives from Fairfax County Government Land Development Services (LDS) Building Division visited with Electrical Construction and Engineering (ECE) students and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) students on February 6 and 7, 2020 to share information about career opportunities for the next generation of building inspectors.

Students in the Automotive Collision Services program at Edison Academy have a new tool to help them train for welding in the collision field as well as other careers where precision welds are important. The Lincoln Electric VRTX Virtual Reality Welding simulator being used in the classroom helps the students to build muscle memory and dramatically improve their welding skills.

Edison Academy students in our Electrical Construction & Engineering and Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning programs are gaining paid on-the-job training as Registered Virginia Youth Apprentices with the FCPS Office of Facilities Management through the Back to Fairfax - Trades for Tomorrow Program. Students were recently featured in a video with FCPS Superintendent, Dr. Brabrand along with an Edison Academy alumnus from our HVAC program, John Balducci who now works for Facilities Management in the Edison Maintenance Center.

The Criminal Justice students collected toy donations during the month of December to assist the Fairfax County Police Department and their Public Safety Cadets with their annual Toy Drive which has been contributing toys to brighten children's holidays for over 30 years. Toys were collected at police stations, government facilities and seven other Fairfax County schools besides Edison Academy through December 19th. Toys go to children ages 3 - 17 in collaboration with local charity programs such as Caring Angels and the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. Thank you to every student, faculty member, and friend of the Criminal Justice program who helped us collect over 70 toys including a 20" bicycle this year.

On Saturday December 7, young people and their parents visited the Edison Academy Culinary Arts program for a Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop. Culinary students made the gingerbread dough and formed the houses for participants who got to decorate them and take them home. The fundraiser generated profits to benefit the Culinary Arts program and canned goods were collected for a local charity, The Coinonia Foundation.

On November 20 and 21 the US Parks Police Mounted Unit made a visit to Edison Academy to share the mission of their police force and to explain and demonstrate the role that police horses play in public safety. Police horses, Trooper and Cayson, were our equine guests for two days with Criminal Justice classes and Veterinary Science Students.

We had a great turnout for the Apprenticeship & Skilled Workforce Career Fair on November 7, 2019 . Thank you to the 57 exhibitors and over 600 visitors who attended the event to explore careers that are available through apprenticeships and training for a skilled or specialized trade.
